Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Harmondsworth
Gardeners Harmondsworth is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. We recognise our legal and moral duty to manage health and safety in a proactive, systematic and responsible way on every project we undertake.
Policy Aims and Scope
This Health and Safety policy applies to all gardening, landscaping, lawn care, hedge cutting, planting, clearance and maintenance work carried out by Gardeners Harmondsworth, whether at private homes, commercial premises or communal outdoor spaces. Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and environmental harm arising from our operations.
We will ensure that health and safety considerations are fully integrated into our planning, decision making and day to day gardening work in our service areas.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Harmondsworth has overall responsibility for the effective implementation of this policy. Management will:
Ensure that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for all routine and non-routine gardening activities, including but not limited to mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, pruning, planting, tree work within our competence, waste handling and the use of powered equipment.
Provide and maintain safe systems of work, safe equipment and safe access and egress at all sites where we operate.
Provide appropriate personal protective equipment, ensure it is used correctly and maintain or replace it when necessary.
Arrange adequate information, instruction, training and supervision so that gardeners and grounds staff are competent to perform their duties safely.
Review this policy regularly and update it when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice or the nature of our gardening services.
Employee Responsibilities
All staff employed by Gardeners Harmondsworth share responsibility for maintaining high standards of health and safety. Employees and regular subcontractors must:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions while carrying out gardening work.
Follow all safety procedures, method statements, training guidance and instructions provided by the company.
Use tools, machinery, vehicles, ladders and other equipment only for their intended purpose and in accordance with training and manufacturer guidance.
Wear and maintain any personal protective equipment supplied to them, such as safety boots, gloves, eye and ear protection, respiratory protection and high-visibility clothing, where required.
Report accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, defects in tools or equipment, and any concerns about health and safety to their manager without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work at a garden or grounds maintenance site, we will assess the potential hazards associated with the tasks, the environment and the equipment to be used. Control measures will be implemented to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Typical controls for gardening work may include:
Planning safe pedestrian and vehicle routes around machinery use and vehicle movements such as ride-on mowers or vans.
Avoiding work at height where possible, and where unavoidable, using only suitable, stable access equipment within our competence.
Identifying underground services, ponds, water features and uneven ground to prevent slips, trips, falls or service strikes.
Limiting exposure to noise, vibration and dust, and using appropriate controls for powered tools and cutting equipment.
Managing manual handling through the use of trolleys, barrows and team lifting techniques to prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
Equipment, Tools and Machinery
Gardeners Harmondsworth will ensure that all gardening equipment is suitable for its intended use and is inspected, serviced and maintained in safe working order. This includes hand tools, powered tools, lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws within our competency, and any hired equipment.
Only trained and authorised personnel will operate powered machinery. Pre use checks will be completed before starting work, and any defects or suspected faults will be reported and the equipment taken out of use until repaired or replaced.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Protection
Where we use gardening products such as fuels, oils, fertilisers, pesticides or cleaning agents, we will assess the associated risks and adopt safe handling, storage and disposal practices. Where possible, we will favour environmentally responsible methods and products aligned with sustainable gardening principles.
We will ensure that staff are instructed in the correct use of any hazardous substances and that suitable control measures are followed to protect people, wildlife and the wider environment.
Welfare, First Aid and Emergency Procedures
Appropriate welfare arrangements will be made for staff on site, including access to drinking water, rest breaks and suitable clothing for prevailing weather conditions. Vehicles or teams will carry basic first aid provisions that are maintained and replenished.
All staff will be briefed on emergency procedures relevant to the site, including how to respond to accidents, incidents involving the public, fire, severe weather or other unexpected events. Any significant incident will be recorded and investigated to identify causes and prevent recurrence.
Training, Competence and Communication
Gardeners Harmondsworth recognises that competence is essential for safe gardening operations. We will provide induction training for new starters and ongoing training for existing staff to ensure they understand and can apply our health and safety procedures. This may include tool specific training, manual handling, working near roads, safe use of ladders and awareness of local site rules.
We will communicate health and safety information clearly and consult with staff on matters that affect their wellbeing. Everyone is encouraged to put forward suggestions for improving safety and to participate actively in maintaining a safe work environment.
Continuous Improvement and Review
We are committed to continually improving our health and safety performance. This includes periodically reviewing risk assessments, learning from incidents and feedback, and adopting relevant best practice within the gardening and grounds maintenance industry.
This Health and Safety policy reflects our ongoing commitment to protecting people, property and the environment while delivering professional gardening services across our operating areas.
